can you disable the composite extension in your xorg.conf?

You can do it by adding this section to the file:

Section "Extensions"
 Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

Restart the Xserver or your computer and let me know if you can reproduce the problem.

NOTE: Compiz won't work

My GPU is nVidia 8400GT.

At me the problem persists.
X not start and I must restore the nv or vesa driver in xorg.conf.

Abit IP35 Pro / E6750 / 8800GT / 177 driver

I am suffering occasional random freezes with 8.10 (updates to date). I tried disabling C1E and this seemed to fix the problem but after an hour or two the machine froze up again and required hard reset.

This problem has appeared in 8.10 for me. 8.04 did not suffer this problem on the same PC.

I will try disabling composite, as recommended above.

Hello,

I have the same problem { X server sometimes crash, sometimes crash all computer (nor SysRQ is not active), but music still play } with Ubuntu 8.10 and with nvidia driver 177 and 173 (Nvidia 7600 GTS).

But my personal imepression is that X server crash less with nvidia driver 173. I found in second terminal (console) a log maybe it helps solve the problem.

" Compiz disable ... and the problem is past " ... it's not true, today reboot my X server with same report (sovidia.png 2009-01-04) again and Compiz was disabled :(. But without Compiz is the problem less often.

one more thing ... X server is rebooted mostly when the window of change volume appears (after press XF86AudioLowerVolum or AudioRaise).

Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.
