Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

On Intrepid, I see loads of these in syslog:

Jul 24 09:39:29 perseus NetworkManager: <info> Error getting killswitch power: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.UnknownError - process 6107: arguments to dbus_move_error() were incorrect, assertion "(dest) == NULL || !dbus_error_is_set ((dest))" failed in file dbus-errors.c line 278. This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

possibly related to this (bug 251423):

Jul 24 09:41:29 perseus hal-ipw-killswitch-linux: error: org.freedesktop.Hal.NoSuchProperty: No property net.interface on device with id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_8086_4230_logicaldev_input

My syslog only goes back about a week, and I haven't seen any occurrences of
this bug during that time. When I originally reported this bug some months
ago, it was happening very regularly.

There is a similar syslog excerpt from someone else in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=471317

I only just noticed the same thing while looking at the terminal output as I was updating to Ubuntu 9.10. This same error (except with a different process number) came up about every third line. I don't know if it's still a problem in 9.10.

I noticed this error during upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 when there were time outs on getting flash player and other packages. Patience payed out and all went through fine at the end.

Got a similar error upgrading to 9.10. The process in question was chipcardd. Killed it and no more errors...

Confirming:
Getting the same error (many times) in the konsole window when upgrading a remote system from Jaunty (9.04) to Karmic (9.10)

'lsof -p <pid>' on the <pid> of the offending process, revealed this process is 'ccardd'.

    sudo killall ccardd

made the noise go away.

I have a Dell Vostro V13, which came with Ubuntu 9.04 and that I am trying to update to Ubuntu 9.10. Lines read as follows:

== || !dbus_error_is_set ((dest))" failed in file dbus-errors.c line 278.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.
process 12338 : arguments to dbus_more_error() were incorrect, assertion "(dest)

Any clue about what I should do, aside from installing Ubuntu 10.4 from USB key?

Thanks!

OK, I used the terminal to trigger the update, and after entering another command that was posted on the screen it worked.

sudo apt-get update

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version.

This bug was marked Incomplete some time ago and was supposed to autoclose after 90 days. Another bug prevented that so I'm closing it now.
