Bug Description
I need to have a script on Ubuntu 8.04 with my Acer Extensa 4420 laptop. I wanted to use ddcprobe to detect when an external monitor is attached and use the proper xorg.conf file. Unfortunately the ddcprobe command probes the vga port and says "input: analog signal" instead of something like "input: analog signal disconnected". In other words, ddcprobe is not delineating between an attached monitor or a detached.
I did notice that the Xorg comand will display a manufacturer make/model properly when the monitor is attached, and show XXX when detached. But unfortunately that command creates a lot of brief screen weirdness when being used for detection and reporting only. I also found I couldn't capture it's output properly in an if statement in Bash on boot.
I would even tolerate some kind of trick in the Grub boot menu so that I could pass a kernel parameter for when I want to attach a monitor, then detect that kernel parameter on boot of services, and then swap the proper xorg.conf file in. But I don't know how to do that either.
