Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xorg-driver-fglrx-envy: Depends: xserver-xorg-core (>= 1:0.99.0-1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
derek@dlaptop:~$ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core

xserver-xorg-core is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:

Oh sorry, yes, I went from Hardy to Intrepid Alpha with update-manager -d and have all the updates on.

the "-envy" drivers are deprecated on Intrepid. You should install xorg-driver-fglrx which however doesn't work with the new Xserver.

In other words I suggest you to keep using the open source "ati" driver.

Hi. I just want to make sure I understand correctly.

fglrx doesn't work with the new Xserver, so for now stick with the ati drivers, ie no 3d effects?

Not to sure if flgrx = 3d effects

Also, in synaptic the normal xorg-driver-fglrx does not state support for MR X1400 but the -envy does. Is that just a description not being updated or does it mean I need to go look for newer hardware

Thanks a lot for the update
