Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.26-4-generic

1)
robert@alpha:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10

robert@alpha:~$ uname -a
Linux alpha 2.6.26-4-generic #1 SMP Mon Jul 14 18:39:36 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

robert@alpha:~$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.26-4.11-generic

2)
robert@alpha:~$ apt-cache policy linux-restricted-modules-2.6.26-4-generic
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.26-4-generic:
  Installed: 2.6.26-4.8
  Candidate: 2.6.26-4.8
  Version table:
 *** 2.6.26-4.8 0

        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3)
I expected to open [System > Administration > Hardware Drivers] and check 'wl' in order for my wireless card to work. This is the method I use with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4310 USB Controller (rev 01)
        Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 137c
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 10
        Memory at fc000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>

4)
Instead, there was nothing to check in [System > Administration > Hardware Drivers]. Also, there does not seem to be a wl module anywhere.

robert@alpha:~$ sudo modprobe wl
FATAL: Module wl not found.

In Ubuntu 8.04 LTS I am able to build the latest wl (http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php) and it works fine. When I build the latest in Intrepid, it doesn't insert.

robert@alpha:~/hybrid_wl$ sudo insmod ./wl.ko
insmod: error inserting './wl.ko': -1 Unknown symbol in module

wl driver works with version hybrid-portsrc-x86_64_5_10_27_6.tar.gz (from http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php) with attached patch.

I'm not sure these bugs are saying the same thing. For example, in the referenced bug they are having a problem with the "wl" driver not working properly, whereas in this bug I am having a problem with the "wl" driver not being there at all.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
