Bug Description

The audio on my laptop worked very well in 8.04, with kernel 2.6.24. However, since upgrading to Intrepid, I have been unable to get any sound out of it (external or internal speakers). Everything seems to work in the audio pipeline, but no output is actually produced.

Booting the old kernel on Intrepid confirmed that audio still works with that kernel.

Using the mixer, I can unmute the internal microphone, and hear that passed through OK, so the hardware is working as well. Let me know if I can do anything further to help diagnose the problem.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems for some additional information you can provide to help identify this problem.

I have had some problems of my own using Intrepid with snd-hda-intel. I uninstalled pulseaudio and now have full functionality. See bug 245389 for more info.

Based on your comment, I experimented a bit more, and the problem does seem related to pulseaudio somehow. Shutting down pulseaudio and playing a sound with aplay works.

However, pulseaudio works fine with the old kernel, so the problem isn't obviously there either.

Switching gstreamer from Autodetect to ALSA works around the problem for applications as well.
