Bug Description

Binary package hint: emdebian-tools

Binary Packages:
emdebian-archive-keyring emdebian-rootfs emdebian-tools libemdebian-tools-perl

Rationale: lack of Ubuntu compatibility with Debian ARM binaries
available to prepare cross-dependencies when cross-building.

emdebian-tools is tightly integrated into Debian and is, naturally, a
Debian native package. It isn't intended to work on Ubuntu because
Ubuntu does not provide the foreign packages needed for linking when
cross building, those come exclusively from Debian. Ubuntu does not
provide ARM packages and makes changes to the equivalent Debian packages
that are incompatible with the Emdebian changes to those packages.
emdebian-tools also supports a variety of other architectures, not just
ARM so making Ubuntu compatible with emdebian-tools would end up making
Ubuntu back into Debian. To me it seems highly unlikely that cross
versions of Debian packages would install over a Ubuntu base, especially
when those packages are the typical debootstrap selection that have a
variety of changes in Ubuntu.

Changed in emdebian-tools:
importance: Undecided → Medium
milestone: none → ubuntu-8.10-beta
status: New → Confirmed

I can understand the reasoning behind the decision to blacklist emdebian tools from Ubuntu, but it has unfortunate consequences for some people trying to use Ubuntu for embedded ARM development.

In particular, the Texas Instruments Davinci platform, which uses the ARM core, has a couple tools that have been specifically tested (and patches written) to work under Ubuntu 8.04:
http://wiki.davincidsp.com/index.php?title=Serial_Boot_and_Flash_Loading_Utility

Many of these same Davinci developers would need to use emdebian to compile binaries, but the decision above now means they must use Debian in addition to Ubuntu, making firmware development more difficult.

I think what we'd need to have it back was someone who was willing to work
with embedian and ubuntu to maintain the tools in an Ubuntu context.

I use Ubuntu for embedded ARM development. I built a cross compiler and used apt-cross to cross compile the necessary dependencies using a sources.list file for Debian - they sit quite happily alongside the rest of the Ubuntu system. It would be good to have these packages back to support cross building packages for other architectures - not just ARM.

I am an android developer as well as an ubuntu developer and am working on getting android apps integrated into gnome and ubuntu. I rely on emdebian-tools and I unfortunately have to rely on debian instead of my preferred os/ubuntu. This is my official request to get emdebian back on ubuntu.
Thankyou,
Kyle Weller
