Bug Description

When I try to install Hardy from the basic Live CD distribution into a new partition I get an ubiquity crash report. I have tried choosing install from the initial menu that the CD generates as well as from the install icon after I let the CD boot me into Hardy. I had been using Gutsy, but when I upgraded to Hardy I got many problems so I wanted to start with a fresh install to a new partition. The GUI never appears. I have many partitions on my system some of them newly created. I attached a screenshot of my partitions in GParted in case that might help.

I'm afraid we cannot further investigate this bug without log files from the installer. Can you please run the installer again and attach /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman to the bug report, following the instructions at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs ?

Thanks!

I uploaded the syslog file, but there is no /var/log/partman file.
I booted from the hardy live cd, picked the install option from the menu, and then it never gave me the gui for the install and instead just booted me into the live hardy system. There was a crash report option, and I did my best to have it file the report with you but the buttons at the bottom of the file report were off the bottom of my monitor with no way to get to them. I saw the top of a yellow button and clicked on it hoping it was the "yes" button, but could not scroll down to see the rest of the screen to see the text on the button. (I often have this same screen issue with your install gui.) I guess I should file another bug report for this ;-)

I uploaded the syslog file but the partman one did not exist. Thanks
for looking into this.

The log contains this just before the installer crashes:

Jul 24 10:50:06 ubuntu kernel: [ 167.484764] SQUASHFS error: zlib_inflate returned unexpected result 0xfffffffd, srclength 131072, avail_in 996, avail_out 131072
Jul 24 10:50:06 ubuntu kernel: [ 167.484777] SQUASHFS error: sb_bread failed reading block 0x1bf0c
Jul 24 10:50:06 ubuntu kernel: [ 167.484780] SQUASHFS error: Unable to read fragment cache block [6fa741a]
Jul 24 10:50:06 ubuntu kernel: [ 167.484785] SQUASHFS error: Unable to read page, block 6fa741a, size 1bc40

The installer crash indicates that it had problems reading some of itself from the CD.

This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, or to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers). Since hardware problems are predominantly the cause of this kind of problem, I'm going to close this bug for now. However, if you are unable to resolve it by hardware means, there's an outside chance that it may be a bug in our driver for your CD drive. If you suspect that, please reopen this bug and reassign it to the 'linux' package.
