Bug Description

On my new laptop, under Windows a small utility made by the manufacturer
monitors my hard drive. This is very useful and reassuring. As all current hard
drives are smart compatible, why not use the smartsuite? A test run by cron once
in a while (every week?) and a small dialog box warning of any default shouldn't
take long to develop (sorry, I'm only a power user ;)) and would be great.
Ideally, if any problem is detected, it should recommend to launch the backup
program.

Thanks for your report. Your idea might get more attention and have the possibility of being implemented if you submit a specification for it. First check whether the idea is already registered https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+specs, and if so, contact the specification's drafter about your ideas. Otherwise, you can start writing a spec yourself. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureSpecifications.

There is already a wiki page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDownUnder/BOFs/SMARTMonitoring related to your proposal.
