Sorry man Ubuntu is too new for me, I have no idea how to operate it like you guys. A friend gave me this computer with the software installed.

This is the message I get when I try to upgrade:Software index is broken

It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first.

I don't know the password to repair the software myself but I can tell you I think the damage was cause due to a forced shutdown in the middle of an update/upgrade.
