Bug Description

After checking some other bugs that are related with my problem i decided to open a new one because the solutions referred there didn't work for me and there may be some other issues that i am missing.

The main problem is the nonworking of brightness function keys, fn+f4 and fn+f5. I am using Ubuntu Hardy with a Gnome desktop. It is a fresh install and i have the doubling problem reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/239706 and in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/207473, though the solutions didn't work for me.

After the installation i was seeing "atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e01e <keycode>' to make it known." output at the dmesg. I tried ti fix it but it didn't help me set the brightness.

I will add the step by step procedure of what i did at this report.

After the fresh installation i was able to see osd when i press the fn+f4 (brightness down) and fn+f5 (brightness up) keys. This pressing weren't effecting the brightness of the backlight so when i check the log messages i saw the setkeycodes message. After check'ng the acp'd log message and investigating the video_brightnessup.sh script i check the key-constants and see the values of KEY_BRIGHTNESSUP and KEY_BRIGHTNESSDOWN. I added these values to /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh script. I also created a .Xmodmap file under my home directory and via xmodmap -pke and edited the keycodes (101 and 212) that i saw at xev output and set them as XF86LaunchD and XF86LaunchE. After this edit, the current acpid log and xev output are attached with this report.

Now i don't see any setkeycodes messages at the dmesg but pressinf the hotkeys don'y adjust the brightness.
I checked the lshal -m output and see the doubling of key pressed but disabling video module didn't help me. After blacklisting the video module i was not able to use neither the Power Manager Birghtness Applet nor the hotkeys to set the brightness.

Trying to set the brightness manually from /proc/acpi/video/VGA0/DD03/brightness didn't make any effect also.

It may be a hal bug or something else. Seems there is a problem with gnome-power-manager and/or hal. I may give more information additon to the below files if needed.

Seems this is a hal related problem because this script is not able to increase or decrease the backlight brightness.
