Bug Description

upon updating kernel during the ubuntu gutsy to heron upgrade (version 7.10 to 8.04), the sound drivers seem not to function as they did in the older kernel. the sound comes out all garbled and sounds like my sound card is broken but upon reverting to the older kernel, the sound returns to a quality state

Thanks for attaching these. Please attach a log file similar to the two already attached for 'dpkg -s linux-ubuntu-modules-$(uname -r)'. It makes it much easier to read through.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I am running Intrepeid Ibex right now, Kernal 2.6.27-9-generic, and am having problems with my laptop (Acer TravelMate 6292). As the "Reporting Sound Bugs" section of Debugging Sound Problems page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems
says, I used to alsa-info.sh to generate a link:

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=6322ce83b2b66a1fd1944487b6939bf98cee47f3

The contents of the link are also attached as alsa-info.txt

Please let me know if you need any more information to resolve this problem.

after much testing, I went to check the sound settings, and one of the sliders was set all the way to the top, making the sound come out garbled. If you have a similar problem, have a quick look at your sound settings and see what the sliders are set to. Being as I did not set these settings myself, it was probably something that happened upon updating.

Yes, after reading some threads on the Ubuntu Forum, I heard that adjusting the PCM slider fixed the problem for some. Although when I adjust the PCM slider (as well all the others), the distortion does not go away, it just gets quieter.

Another thing that I noticed is the sound when Ubuntu first starts up (when you are brought to the long in screen) is fine. It's after you log on that you begin to hear the distorted sound.
