This refers to a MacBook Pro rev. 3 notebook. What can one do to activate DVI out?

System now fully updated (Intrepid final), problem remains. Testing with an original Apple DVI to VGA converter (this MBP has no VGA out) and a FujitsuSiemens cathode ray tube monitor (17" or 19" so).

PS Maybe I can help with additional information to solve this problem but you would have to tell me which information you need.

You've added a task against the nouveau drivers - have you actually tested using them? They are not available in the Intrepid repositories.

How have you tried to enable the DVI out? You need to use the 'nvidia-settings' program to control dual-head, video-out, and such.

Thank you for this information. As I was told in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/61447, the default open source "nv" driver and the "nouveau" driver are just the same. Are you saying this information is wrong?

I have NOT tried the proprietary Nvidia driver. I am looking for an open source solution of this problem.

This information is indeed wrong. I'm updating the answer now.

The 'nv' driver is maintained by an nvidia employee, and is generally
fairly feature-poor (not much acceleration, no 3d, poor dual-head, etc).
The nouveau driver is a community project that aims to provide a
feature-complete open-source driver, and has no nvidia backing. The
nouveau drivers are experimental - many things work, and many cards work
much better than with the nv drivers, but some cards don't work at all.

Thank you for this information. I wil do a fresh install as soon as 9.04 is finished and try around with the nouveau driver then. How would I replace the default nv driver by the nouveau driver?

Found the answer myself: "With the release of Ubuntu 9.04 next April, a packaged version of Nouveau will finally appear in Ubuntu's repositories." (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NjkxNg).

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.
