Bug Description

Binary package hint: efibootmgr

Quite a few people seem to be working on ways of getting Ubuntu on MacBook Pro (MBP), and it does seem to work in a way. However, if one uses Ubuntu as one's only operating system on a MBP, you can no longer profit from bug fixes coming with EFI updates.

Would it be possible and legal to implement an Ubuntu EFI updater into Ubuntu 8.10 or later? EFI updates are available on Apple's website.

Have you tried running the firmware update binary from a Mac OS X install CD?
