What is the output of ls -l /etc/aliases
What happens if you run newaliases manually. sudo newaliases

I see from the dpkg log that you have a lot of software from 3rd party repositories installed. Is there any of it that might have modified your aliases file?

'newaliases' returns no output.

I don't think I really have *a lot* of 3rd party applications installed, but almost every one needs their own repo. None of it should have touched the aliases file. I have Miro, Wine, Swiftfox, Opera, Picasa, Google Desktop, Last.fm, and two Pidgin plugins. And I don't generally ruin GUI apps as root.

Not sure where to go with this then. That same command failed during the
upgrade. Thanks for reporting back.

Given that the newaliases command is run as root, the error could only be caused by some additional security package (e.g., selinux, apparmor) having a bad configuration and blocking it.
