convert table to text only works for paragraphs

trying to convert a 1 column table into tab, semicolon, or 'other'-separated text (i tried comma and dash) does not act as expected.
Instead of the expected tab, semicolon, or other character separating what were previously the table cells, Writer returns the cell text separated by line breaks, as if 'paragraph' had been selected for the 'separate text at' instead. So no matter which text separator is chosen for the table-to-text conversion, the result in separated by line breaks.
