Gnome PalmOS limited charset support

Hi,
I tried to sync my Palm Zire 72 with evolution using Gnome's PalmOS tool. The
sync completed ok but all (greek) characters where improperly displayed. Piloc
software (used on Palm to write other languages than English) does not support
utf-8 and uses CP1253 for many languages including greek. I ended with non
readable contacts and todo's both on my pc and on my palm.

JPilot works fine after changing charset in it's preferences.

There is a working patch for pilot-link 0.11.8 that fixes the problem. I tried it myself with windows-1251 encoding and was able to sync Palm with Evolution without problems: all russian characters are reencoded to utf8 and displayed correctly.

I'll submit a request with pilot-link product to include this patch in Ubuntu version of pilot-link.

Ah, aparently I need to learn more about Debian/Ubuntu development process. I found a Debian bug (almost 2 years old) that deals with this issue. The maintainer, though, seems to be reluctant to force the patch into Debian, the issue was forwarded to pilot-link developers. They are, however, reluctant to fix it, too, for no aparent reason. The original patch (not the one I referred to above) was submitted to a mailing list 4 (four!) years ago. It's unbelievable such a small issue takes forever to fix. Here is the original posting (in Russian):

I see that there's very little chance this ever gets fixed in pilot-link head, but maybe it could be fixed in Debian version of the package?

After reading the discussion a bit, I found I preferred the patch in http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214611#c33 as well. I'll have i386 and amd64 packages uploaded to http://people.ubuntu.com/~dholbach/pilot/pilot-link/ in a bit - it'd be nice to get some testers for it.

Hi, I 've tested the patch (with my own packages though, daniel's packages have deppendency problems in dapper) and works just fine.

A new version (2.0.14) was uploaded to Edgy. It'd be nice if you had a chance to test this and report back, if the problem still persists.
