If I do a "regular" boot, I can see the splash and the progress bar, but then I am greeted by a blank screen when X loads, and only a forced poweroff will get me out of there (ctrl-alt-sysrq + E or + F hangs the system). If I edit the kernel boot line to remove the "splash" option or boot into failsafe mode then start X, I have no problems.

I have a Intel 945GM embedded graphics controller on a laptop.

Try to remove the line >>Option "UseFBDev" "true"<< from your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and check it again after a restart.
If it doesn't work please attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old the next start after a uspslash boot. and your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

I don't have the "UseFBDev" option in my xorg.conf.

Here are the two files, the Xorg.0.log is from the successful boot right now, and the Xorg.0.log.old from the 2 minutes prior boot that ended on a black screen, with sysrq unable to do more than sync disks. Alt+sysrq+E hung the machine.

I checked dmesg, and uvesafb is complaining of a missing /sbin/v86d. I'll install v86d and test again.

Now it boots into X, but no splash screen, as uvesafb complains it can't find any for 1024x768 (my screen is 1280x800), so it boots in text mode until the switch to X.

Just had a reboot and a hang, so here is the Xorg.0.log.old. Another probably unrelated bug I've found is that after a suspend X gets stuck in a restarting loop, showing the cursor for a couple of seconds to restart again. I only saw that after installing v86d, so I'm going to remove it and check if it is indeed the problem before making a new bug report.

The new bug is v86d related, removing it allows suspend/resume to work again.
