ark doesn't open zip archives

In intrepid, ark shows empty when I try to open a zip archive with it. I have yet to try other archives, but it is unable to open any zip archive.

I have had this problem since installing Kubuntu/KDE4 Hardy Heron. I installed all the suggested debs for ark, still I can not open zip archives with ark. I get an empty window like the OP states. In addition if I use ark to File->Open, the "Supported Files" Filter does not list Zip.

The upstream bug has been resolved - pls check if this fix can be applied to the package in intrepid. ZIP files are very popular and not being able to open them is really a regression.

It seems that, at least the Hardy packages, are compiled against libarchive instead of libzip, which makes ark not work for zip files.

Should be fixed in both Intrepid and Hardy now.
ark-kde4 4:4.1.1-0ubuntu1~hardy1~ppa2 should contain the fix in Hardy.

Tested in Hardy and Intrepid, and is now fixed in both, at least for me.

It works for me.
But a zip with a zip inside it, will fail to open.

Fixed in Hardy and Intrepid for simple zip files, however, it's true that if fails to open zip files with zip files inside.
