Email notification doesn't work properly

Binary package hint: pidgin

I'm using Pidgin to get notified about new emails on my gmail account. When pidgins email message list is cleared, new emails get reported well. Pidgin shows a correct number of new messages and displays their captions. However, if pidgins email message list already contains items, the number of messages is too high and individual email captions are not shown. I can manually clear the list by unlogging my account und logging in again.

I'm using Pidgin 2.4.1 on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), the package is pidgin 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1 and pidgin-data 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1

I think my bug may be related to this, but I also use hotmail.
I am experiencing this in pidgin 2.4.3, but it was already present in 2.4.1.
