Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager-gnome

In Hardy Heron (64bit - kernel 2.6.24-19-generic - nm-applet 0.6.6) I have found an issue about nm-applet. In fact I usually use a mobile phone internet connection through usb cable and, when I plug this last into usb connector, nm-applet correctly shows the animated icon during the handshake connection (when the cable isn't plugged the icon shows a red triangle at the right bottom of the two little black monitors) and then the icon turn to standard connected image (the two monitors are black with no red triangles).

But today I connected my laptop to a utp cable (through rj45 cable) with a fixed IP (I manually setted the network through nm-applet).

Then I rebooted my pc (with nm-applet manual configured still) and tried to reconnect Ubuntu to Internet through my mobile phone (and usb cable) but I noticed that:
- before I plugged my cable, nm-applet already showed to me the connection icon with the two monitor black (with no red triangle) even if there weren't any Internet connection
- when I plugged in my usb cable nothing changed about nm-applet icon (nor animation appeared) even if Internet connection was ok (nm-applet "silently" did its work).

So I thought that the problem was in manual configuration of nm-applet and I checked the dhcp configuration (disabling manual config) and I tried again with mobile usb connection, but nothing changed.

At last I reboot my pc and the "bug" disappeared.

I think that the problem is in the fact that, for some reasons, nm-applet seems to show the animated icon (as well as the red triangle if there isn't any internet connection) if it reads, only at boot time, the dhcp setting in the network config file.

I tried to test nm-applet icon behavoir in another hardware (sony vaio laptop), with a 32 bit version of Ubuntu Hardy Heron and with an internet connection through utp cable.
Even in this case the nm-applet icon doesn't run ok as with cable unplugged I don't see any red triangle showing to me that there isn't any actived internet connection.

Michele, I can still confirm the issue in Hardy Heron. Not yet tested in Intrepid (I will do it as soon as possible)

I have tested the issue with Jaunty and the new nm-applet, in this distro, fixes the bug present in Hardy.
