Bug Description

Binary package hint: cupsys

Upon upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy, I am unable to print to my work's Xerox printer

Error in CUPS:
Unable to write print data: Broken pipe

This is with a socket connection

If I attempt to use an IPP URL to the printer I get the error:
"recoverable: Network host 'printer.mycomp.com' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds..."

The printer is not busy and this error will never change

I did not change my printer settings from Gutsy to when I switched to Hardy, so this definitely seems like a regression.

I am not sure where to find any additional logging (/var/log files seem to have no logging output for this)

Printer type:
Xerox WorkCentre Pro 238

Cupsys version 1.3.7-1ubuntu3

It seems that the solution is here: http://p-s.co.nz/wordpress/?p=227. It worked for me too.

In the Properties/Parameters dialog of the printer just replace the 'socket' protocol with 'lpd' and remove the 9100 port, then apply.

The behaviour is very disturbing for the non-geek user : no error message, only a stalled printing and then, nothing.

I have a very similar problem with a "UTAX CLP 3726" printer, that I access via a CUPS server. It works for some printing jobs, but suddenly will fail. Then it will reject jobs and its CUPS status page says "Unable to write print data: Broken pipe". Printing only starts working again after my network administrator has restarted the printer.

Ubuntu-versions that make this printer crash: 11.10 and 12.04. I can print on other printers via this CUPS server without problems, though.

Interestingly, I could not reproduce the error with openSUSE 11.3: Printing a specific file (evince, 2 pages per sheet, duplex short side) from a computer with SUSE installed worked, sending the same file with the same options via the same CUPS-server from Ubuntu 12.04 resulted in the "broken pipe" error.

The file is not big, only 60 kB. Unfortunately, I cannot attach the file, as it is an article in a proprietary journal:

Hardy has reached end of life, and this package is not present in later releases. Closing all related bugs.
