Firefox 3's full screen mode flickers redundant hint bar at top of screen

Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Ubuntu 8.04.1, firefox-3.0 3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1.

With Firefox 3, using Full Screen mode, having turned off View -> Status
Bar and Navigation Toolbar, results in a short hint of a toolbar at the
top of the screen above the web page. When the pointer moves over it,
it expands, sliding the web page down, to show the tabs.

If, however, there's no tabs in this browser window, and Preferences ->
Tabs -> Always show the tab bar is set to off so the tab bar isn't
visible outside of Full Screen, then on selecting Full Screen the hint
of a toolbar appears as before but moving the pointer over it makes it
disappear completely and then come back before it disappears again, ad
infinitum.

The expected behaviour is that the short toolbar hint isn't there at all
so the web page truly gets all the vertical space on the screen, and
nothing happens when the pointer moves to the top edge of the screen.

With Firefox 2, I used to be able to use Full Screen to compare subtlely
different photos. Each was on a web page with a black background.
Navigation between them was by keyboard. Now, with that annoying
light-gray rectangle starring brightly at the top of the screen, the eye
is distracted from the main event; the photos. Comparison is no longer
possible.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I am unable to reproduce this in Maverick. Is this still a problem for you? Can you test in the latest release, 10.10? Thank you.

Again, can you test this with Ubuntu 10.10 please? Just changing bug status gets us nowhere without information to support it. Thank you.

Sorry, I did provide more information at the same time but I'm getting
a

    Timeout error
Sorry, something just went wrong in Launchpad.
We've recorded what happened, and we'll fix it as soon as possible.
    Apologies for the inconvenience.
Trying again in a couple of minutes might work.
    (Error ID: OOPS-1824B1617)

in Firefox and it hasn't worked since, e.g. Reload with resending the form. It
seemed the change of the bug's status has got through but not my comment to
explain. I'll re-type it tomorrow starting afresh.

That's not a problem at all, although to save the trouble with Launchpad, you can just reply to the email you get from Launchpad, i.e. this one and the previous one and it will appear as your last one has, or email <email address hidden> - there is always a way around things that don't quite work how you want them to :)

Ubuntu 10.10, firefox 3.6.16+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1, turn off status and toolbars are before. A window with a single tab has just the menubar and then the web page immediately below. Full screen that with F11. The web page initially fills the screen but then slightly later it's shifted down by a new light-gray rectangle five pixels high and the full screen width.

Move the mouse pointer to the top row of pixels and run it left to right, staying on that very top row. The gray rectangle alternates it presence on every mouse movement, with the page below shifting up and down as it comes and goes resulting in the web page flickering quickly between two positions.

There appears to be no use to the rectangle, e.g. on mouseover it doesn't grow to give extra UI. I want the web page to be *full* screen and that doesn't seem possible. What's currently there is a very flickery useless visual artifact that surely can't be intentional.

I have followed the instrcutions to the letter with that build and am not seeing this problem at all. It could be compiz or graphics-driver specfific. Can you run "apport-collect -p xorg 246040" and allow it to grab more information for us? Also, if you could make us a screen recording of the problem perhaps it would be more obvious on how to reproduce this. Thank you.
