Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

When System->Administration->GDMSetup, on [acessibility] tab, if I set sound to start/fail session then after login the sound system will be disabled. MPlayer, Totem, all multimedia applications sound will be disabled. If I disable sound event to start/fail session then Sound will be enabled after login again.

I test 4 times using standard gdm.conf and gdm.conf-custom, and events sound in .wav format.

If I set only begin session, then everithing is OK. But if I try to set other then sound will be disabled.

Ok. I discover whats happening.

If I set in gnome-sound-system .wav to the same events and set sound events of gdm then after login in GDM anyone can play any sound, includes videos. Some events sounds in GDM conflicting with GNOME Sound System Events.

Example :

If in GDM I set .wav to Start Session successful and set in gnome sounds (preferences->sound->sound) in event Start Session other .wav then the problem appear.
I need to disable all events of gnome sound system to use gdm sound events.

I dont know if problem is GDM or GNOME Sound System Events.

thank you for your bug report, could you attach your .xsession-errors after getting the issue? do you use a sound server? the issue is weird but you seem to be the only one to have the bug and that's not really an hardy blocker, not accepting the hardy task nomination

I will attach :
~/.xsession-errors
~/.gnome/sound/events/gnome.soundlist
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom
screenshots of gdmsetup and gnome-system-sound.

But it's simple to make this bug appear, only set all 3 sounds events in gdmsetup, then setl sounds/events in gnome :

dialog question
error message
warning message
information message
end session *
start session *

I believe that (*) can not be used if you use this event/sound in gdmsetup :
start session sucessfull
start session failed.

The .wav files does not corrupted, I can try any .wav and I get the same error. If I unset sound to start session sucessfull and start session failed in gdmsetup, everything comes OK again.

Thanks a lot,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
