In your varlogdistupgradeapttermlog file you have a line (line 2410):
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/brasero_0.7.1-3ubuntu1_i386.deb (--unpack):

corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive
It seems the package was not downloaded successfully... This can happen sometimes...
Just do 'sudo aptitude install brasero' and it should work again...

Hmmm, yes, it seems it doesn't download the package again, since it's already there in the cache...
Remove it by typing 'sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/brasero_0.7.1-3ubuntu1_i386.deb'
Then repeat the above 'sudo aptitude install brasero'

I tried to remove the .deb package from the cache on my system and tried
to do a 'sudo aptitude install brasero', but this did not work either. I
got the same error log as before.

Since I had an urgent requirement of DVD burning software I downloaded
brasero package for an ftp server in USA and did a manual install.

Do you want me to try reinstalling after removing the installed package
and simulating the environment that existed before? I would be glad to
help.

hmmm, maybe the .deb is actually corrupt on the server? can you tell us which server your system downloads packages from? you can find this if you go to System->Administration->Software Sources, or inside the file /etc/apt/sources.list

Ok, then try uninstalling the brasero package again and removing it from the cache. Then change the server to 'Main Server' and install brasero... Tell us if the corrupted package archive error went away.
And thank you for your help...

I did try uninstalling and changing the server from India to main
server. Brasero installation went on well. I think the brasero package
in the Indian server is/was corrupted.
I think there is a need to relook into the packages in Indian server as
I also faced some difficulties in installing cairo-dock (sorry if this a
wrong thread to post this concern)
