Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

It would help if you would attach a screenshot as well.

Thanks!

I can second this bug report:

I start pidgin 1:2.4.3-0ubuntu1~hardy1 from archive.ubuntu.com. There are no error messages, and pidgin reports status: available. However, there are also no buddies, not even offline buddies. All groups are empty.

When I go check my accounts, their protocol is "unknown" ("Unbekannt" in German). Editing an account trying to re-set the protocol does not succeed: the dropdown list with the protocols is empty: I cannot select a protocol.

What puzzles me most, is that it used to work after the update; it's a recent development.

this screenshot shows the account list with the missing protocols. It does not show the empty buddy list, because I deactivated all the accounts to try and edit them.

Same problem, but I see "Napster" and SNPP protocol in "Modify account" window.

I have the same problem (for a while). It started on Ubuntu 8.10 (no problems on 8.04) and seems to be account-specific (other accounts work on my computer). My account works fine in Amsn too.

The problem: when pidgin loads, it connects to my MSN account, fetches my buddy list and does what it's supposed to do. When the buddy list needs to be displayed, things go wrong and nothing shows up. No error messages or warnings either (not even in the debug window). Pidgin is still responsive, so it's not a crash.

I have tried the pidgin from SVN, which has the same issue.

I can provide you with a debug-log when you contact me privately.

Kind regards

Philippe

I have a problem with Pidgin - not showing any buddy list from any account. I deleted the accounts and added a single one - <email address hidden>

I launched pidgin -d and got the following tail end to my terminal output:

It would appear the connection is timing out. This problem is new - this week - and I have no idea what triggered it.

This just started happening to me today for some reason. The tail end of `pidgin -d` after it starts up and does a bunch of NAT stuff:

One of my accounts is AIM, so I signed onto AIM through Meebo, and it did not notify me that my account was signed on in another place, so it seems that pidgin is not signing me in or anything.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.
