Bug Description

After installation of Ubuntu Hardy JeOS and using the linux-image-virtual kernel, the ipv6 netfilter modules are not installed.
On other Hardy systems (for instance that run linux-image-2.6.24-19-powerpc, and linux-image-2.6.24-16-server) I have the directory:

/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/net/ipv6/iptables

However, linux-image-virtual lacks this directory, so ip6tables will not work.

I would also like to see IPv6 netfilter modules made available for 8.04 virtual kernels.
The situation is still currently this:

% uname -a
Linux demo 2.6.24-24-virtual #1 SMP Wed Apr 15 17:16:48 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

% ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.24-24-virtual/kernel/net/ipv6/
total 440

On hosts with non-virtual kernel, the listing contains directory netfilter but is otherwise similar.

This bug was reported against the linux-meta package when it likely should have been reported against the linux package instead. We are automatically transitioning this to the linux kernel package so that the appropriate teams are notified and made aware of this issue. Thanks.

affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

Hi /usr/local/dick,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Please then run following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 244272

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if this is fixed in the latest development release, but users of Hardy LTS are affected, so I think this is a valid bug.

I agree. Also, Hardy LTS has plenty of future left, so IPv6 netfilter
modules may be even more useful before April 2013 than they are now.

From 2.6.24-27.68 change log I noticed that this bug was fixed with kernel 2.6.24-27.65. See bug #487010 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/487010 for more info.

In other words IPv6 netfilter modules are now available at least with the i686 -virtual kernel.

Closing this bug with Won't fix as this kernel is no longer supported.
Please feel free to open a new bug report if you're still experiencing this on a newer release (Bionic 18.04.3 / Disco 19.04)
Thanks!
