I have a similar problem. I installed the Firefox version that came with the Ubuntu 8.04 distribution CD, but have religiously upgraded, and now have version 3.0.14. The Firefox browser reports the Shockwave Flash to be of version 9.0 r100. I have tried installing newer versions of flash player, both from Adobe and from the Ubuntu repositories. Installing the upgrades seemed to work. There was no error message. But after all those installations, Firefox reports the flash player version to be still 9.0 r100.

Many website's video will not play. They require me to install the latest flash player.

Machine info:
OS: Ubuntu 8.04
CPU: Intel dual core
Browser: Firefox 3.0.14
