Bug Description

Hardware is detected OK but it hangs everytime at 2% "Retrieving binutils-static-udeb"

Error messages start out with ata errors on sda

I've swapped my CDROM 3 times and done all the usual cleanup on the machine.

SGI 1100 1GB RAM - Dual Pentium 3 - Seagate Barracuda HD - integrated ATI Rage XL - integrated Fast Ethernet.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi,

We have a compaq ML350, 2 x PIII 1 Ghz CPU, SCSI card, 3x Seagate SCSI 18GB drives, 1GB memory (4 x 256)

Same problem at the same place.

Changing cd rom didn't work, we tried the noapic command line to get past an initial bios error reported (8445?)

A number of users have had this issue ( mostly with compaqs but also dell / ibm) and they all tend to have scsi, pIII configurations.

HTH,
Shane

Same thing here: hangs at 2% "Retrieving binutils-static-udeb"

This is an ancient Rackable Systems server 2x PIII 850 GHz, 1x SCSI 18GB Seagate drive and 512MB RAM Tyan
I am typing as I investigate the problem, since I have a drawer full of old hardware.

1) Switching CD-ROM from IDE1 channel to IDE2...
same bug
2
) Replacing Seagate 18GB SCSI drive with Fujitsu 73GB drive...
same bug
3
)Removing SCSI drive; putting an IDE WD800 80GB drive on IDE2 channel as a master instead, switching CD-ROM to slave on IDE2
same bug... Thus, this has nothing to do with SCSI drives.

4)Removing IDE hard drive, reconnecting SCSI Seagate 18GB, burning SuSE 11.0 CD...
Success!

Summary: My hardware is OK, it's an Ubuntu bug, and it has nothing to do with SCSI, it shows up with IDE drives too.

This was a bad drive rather than a bug.
