Than you for taking your time to file this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

1) is compiz setup to start as part of the session-start(you can check this by System > Preferences > System > Syststem Start tab) ? or are you starting it by alt+f2 and then "compiz --replace"?

2) are you using nvidia card? if yes, what is the version of the driver?

Note: After changing some compiz configuration parameters and doing a cold boot, it now works. avant now also works.

compiz is not in menu: System>Preferences>Sessions>Tab:Startup Programs, although avant is.
compiz is in System>Preferences>Sessions>Tab:Current Session and has an order 10.

I am unaware of how compiz is started, compiz was installed with synaptic two days ago.
