Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.04; kernel: 2.6.24-19-generic; maxima: 5.13.0-3ubuntu1; wxmaxima: 0.7.1-1ubuntu3

After starting maxima in a terminal, typing just "1+1" and Enter, maxima hangs up. It only reacts on "Ctrl+C". Even "quit()" doesn't work.

I've tried this tips:

- compiling and testing the newest version 5.15.0, as described on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Maxima
- compiling with cmucl instead of gcl (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wxmaxima/+bug/43150/comments/26)

but it is the same situation as before.

"maxima -s 4010" results in "jfa: starting server on port 4010 couldn't open socket:".
Certainly, wxmaxima, which I prefer, always sends "Not connected to maxima!".

I think you're confused by Maxima's syntax.

Maxima is waiting for you to type a ";", e.g.
(%i1) 1+1;
(%o1) 2

Actually, no. Maxima does hang up and stops accepting input, or at least it did when the bug was filed.

Sorry for my late response.
This problem doesn't exist on my current system (Ubuntu 8.10, kernel: 2.6.27-11-generic; maxima: 5.13.0-3ubuntu1; wxmaxima: 0.7.1-1ubuntu3). More probably than not you're right (Tim) that I've forgotten a semicolon at the end of a maxima-command.
Even the problem in WxMaxima is vanished. But it could be in Ubuntu 8.04, maybe I will check this some days later.

I'm closing this bug as invalid, we're probably seeing a missed semicolon here.
badpazzword, if you're having a genuine freeze, please open a new bug and describe the symptoms there.

Changed in maxima (Ubuntu):
