Bug Description
Binary package hint: firefox-3.0
Firefox 3 crashes a lot.
Most often when using GMail, during tab close. Other pages crashed too, again most often during tab close (e.g. facebook picture pages), but much more randomly than the Gmail inbox page.
It's been happening to me since 3.0b5. Recently I've tried out different versions, including the 3.1alpha to see weather the bug was fixed. I tried all of them after deleting the .mozilla dir every time. I also don't have any add-ons installed, and I removed the flash plugin and libflashsupport. In each version I also tried the safe mode.
In each version I tried the following steps in order to crash:
- open firefox
- go to gmail.com and log in
- open another tab
- close the gmail tab
These are the versions that I found were effected:
- Hardy (3.0~b5+
- Hardy-proposed (3.0+nobinonly-
- 3.0+nobinonly-
The only version that was not effected, and did not crash after those steps was 3.1~a1~
My System:
Dell Inspiron 1420 (Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz)
2GB RAM
Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy)
Kernel: 2.6.24-19-generic
Gnome: 2.22.2
Compiz(if it matters): 0.7.4
I'm attaching gdb output for the 3.0+nobinonly-
I have another desktop computer running hardy with the 3.0b5 version, and it runs fine.
Notes:
- The bug seems to effect only the newer version of Gmail, older UI closes tabs fine.
- I only tried versions I could find in repositories. If I were to compile it my self, could that make the difference?
BTW, while i thought this was initially flash related, and that pulseaudio problem that people are experiencing (as i did, myself for a while) this is not flash related at all, as I can now tell.
I rebuilt my system, fresh install, installed all the latest hardy heron updates from only the system given repositories (US), and have yet to install any kind of FF plugin or download anything from Adobe or anyone else. And so I go to Gmail, and it crashes my browser.
