Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.04, Dell Inspiron 8200, nVidia Corporation NV17[GeForce4 440Go], Intel Pentium 4 Mobile CPU 1.7GHz

The Laptop works fine with the proprietary nVidia "nvidia" driver when activating it (restart X) after
successful boot with "nv" driver. If I reboot the system with the "nvidia" driver in the
xorg.conf, it will lock after a few minutes, requiring a hard reboot, then it locks already
at the login screen, showing the strange stripes in attachment.jpg.

What I did so far:
- completely formatted the Laptop
- installed Hardy with Live-CD
- activated Proprietary nVidia driver (nvidia-glx, 96.43.05)
- reboot
- black screen. Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP" in Section "Device" helps
- reboot, System works shortly, then crashes hard, nothing works, hard reboot
- while reboot, strange display (see attachment.jpg), system locks on login screen
- changing and restarting the system with "nv" instead of "nvidia" driver
- system works fine with "nv"
- then trying to restart x with "nvidia" driver, system works fine, everything ok
- restarted the laptop. after a few moments after successful startup, the system crashes hard again
- already in Bios you can see the strange vertical stripes
- lockup at startscreen, hard reboot

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
