Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox produces strange error messages if it is left open while the system updates.
So, wouldn't it be a good idea for it to ask you to close it before updates take place?
I know people should look through the updates and check what they need to close, but when you've got 20 or so, I'm sure most people would click "Install Updates" without checking them.

Thank for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you tell us what are the error messages? I suppose that is produced when you are updating from firefox-3.0b5 to rc1?

Yes, this was when upgrading from 3b5 to rc1.

I didn't save the error message I'm afraid, and I didn't poke about too much to see what worked etc.

However, the error message appeared when trying to load any web page, whether local or on the net.

Also, firefox wouldn't close with the close button, but I had to kill it. After restarting it, it worked fine.

If I can get someone to do the same process and get an error message, I'll post it here.

Just upgraded manually (from packages.ubuntu.com) on a live CD, and the following happened:

When opened a new window or tried to load any page, a tiny window (1.png) loaded. If I resized this (2.png), there was no content in it.

Loading the print dialog, print preview, download manager didn't work at all and adding a bookmark didn't display the dialog correctly.

Please note: this bug isn't about the errors after upgrading, since they are fixed after a restart, but more the fact that the user should be alerted to restart firefox after an upgrade.

I am unable to reproduce it on my end.
Leaving it as incomplete until we have a positive test. Testers are welcome.

Thank you for your bugreport. Since this seems to be an issue with
version 3 of the firefox browser, I'm reassigning the package.

This is now fixed.
If you try to update Firefox with it open, you get a lightbulb image in the notification area. When clicked on, the following message is displayed:

Firefox-3.0 restart required
Firefox-3.0 has been upgraded (or reinstalled) and must be restarted. Please quit and restart your web browser now.
