Bug Description

I have installed ubuntu linux version 5.04 on a secondary (slave) ide hard
drive. When the hard drive is booted Grub displays messages
Booting 'Ubuntu kernel 2.6.10-5-386'
root (hd1,0)
Filesystem is fat,partition type 0xb
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10-5-386 root=/dev/hdb1 ro quiet splash
Error 15: File not found

I searched the known problems but could not find one that matched. I assume grub
cannot find file vmlinuz-2.6.10-5-386 Is this name correct or is it in a
different location instead of /boot or maybe the kernel wasn't built properly
during the install? I am new to linux and want to get rid of windows from my pc.
If more information is needed please let me know. Thank You

Grub seems to be looking at the wrong location. If you have a live cd at hand,
please boot from it and attach the output of sudo fdisk -l and the file
/boot/grub/menu.lst from your installed system.

Output of sudo fdisk command

Here is the output from the sudo fdisk -l command

Device Boot Start End Blocks ID System
/dev/hdb1 * 1 368 2955928+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdb2 369 389 168682+ 5 Extended
/dev/hdb5 369 389 168651 82 Linux swap / Solaris

I booted the Live CD but don't know how to get to the hard drive to display
/boot/grub/menu.lst Any advise? I will check out my Linux for Dummies book.

Thanks Zoltan

The Primary drive has Windows Xp installed the slave or secondary disk is Linux listed above. I
checked out the problems you mentioned and thought of making the disk listed above the primary
drive and the Windows XP disk the slave. I will then reinstall linux and let you know what
happens. Again many thanks. Zoltan

I swapped the drives, reinstalled and the system booted fine as the primary hard
drive. Thank you for your help. Now on to adding a modem so I can connect to the
internet! Should I close this bug or do you do that? I don't know what the
protocol is.

I installed 7.04 alternate and grun was installed to the wrong mbr. I copied the relevant lines from the configuration file to that other grub, though. Had to change hd 0,0 to hd 1,0. Then on trying to boot I got that error 15: file not found. I quickly found out it is not the kernel. Being able to boot in recovery mode provided the necessary hint: after removing "splash" (and also "quiet" while I was at it), things work now.
