unable to enable effects with metacity compositing

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

When the metacity compositing is enabled (gconf key app/metacity/general/compositing_manager), it is not possible to enable desktop effects from the appearance dialog. The dialog just says not able to enable effects.

Could this be modified to turn of compositing in metacity before attempting to start compiz.

FYI, I found that this was the reason that desktop effects weren't working by running the compiz-check script (http://forlong.blogage.de/article/pages/Compiz-Check) -- it may be worth checking this for any other useful functionality which could be tested when enabling effects.
