Bug Description

Nautilus does not show hidden files even when this option is enabled. This is only under user. When under root all files are shown correctly.

Ubuntu Hardy, fresh install.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

After going to Edit->Preferences and checking the box for "Show Hidden and Backup Files", the hidden files do not appear unless nautilus is restarted or the session initially started with this option enabled (then disabled and re-enabled). I notice the same problem with a root session of nautilus (either with gksudo or su). Bug confirmed in Hardy Heron.

In my case the files did not appear even after restarting or rebooting. Only after I created a new user porofile, the files appeared under the session of new user!

This is not a duplicate because in that case all worked after Nautilus restart. unlike my case.

OK, unmarked as duplicate, changing status back to New since I cannot confirm that it doesn't work after Nautilus restart. Can you please provide more information, including exact steps to reproduce your problem?
Thank you.

I simply installed new system and made updates. I changed the Nautilus properties only after update.

May you tell us a few easy steps in order to reproduce that behavior? thanks.

What we mean, is you can you provide us with a step by step instruction on how to show that the bug exists? Example:
1. open nautilus
2. go to Edit->Preferences and check the box for Show hidden and backup files
3. At this point nautilus does not show files
4. Restart nautilus
5. Nautilus still does not show hidden files
etc, etc. Please include as much detail as possible.

Using a structure like that allows us to attempt to reproduce the symptoms you are reporting. The big catch is apparently that hidden files will not show even after you close nautilus windows and re-open one.
Thank you.

Wel I do not know how to reproduce it. I just decided to reinstall my Linux system. So I formatted the hard drive and installed the Linux. As my sound card does not work with standard kernel, I enabled the hardy-proposed and hardy-backports repositories and made update. Then

1. open nautilus
2. go to Edit->Preferences and check the box for Show hidden and backup files
3. At this point nautilus does not show files
4. Restart nautilus
5. Nautilus still does not show hidden files

Can you please post the output of this command so we know what version of nautilus is being dealt with:
 apt-cache policy nautilus
I think it is different than during install since you are using the proposed and backports repositories.
Thank you.

By the way I now do not experience the bug as I removed the previous user account and created a new one to get rid if this bug.

alright, that was probably something broken in that configuration rather than a bug, closing the report.
