Bug Description
Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04
Nvidia 6600GT
Athlon Thunderbird 1.3GHz (no SSE)
On my system jockey recommends installing nvidia-glx-new (169.12). Convenient but GLX doesn't work. glxinfo reports "Illegal Instruction" and any OpenGL app fails with similar errors. The reason is that starting with the 169 series of drivers, CPUs must support SSE and older Athlons don't. More info here: http://
Bug #214379 also reports this issue against Compiz.
This situation should be checked for by jockey and nvidia-glx-new should not be installed when /proc/cpuinfo doesn't show SSE support.

Looks like this problem is being worked on as part of significant changes to the nvidia drivers: /lists. ubuntu. com/archives/ ubuntu- devel/2008- July/025723. html
