Bug Description

After upgrading to the latest version of Firefox in Hardy (b to rc1), the beagle extension (version1.10) is designated as incompatible by Firefox and is deactivated.

Upstream rejected it. The extension included with beagle-0.3.5 and earlier was not fully compatible with firefox-3. beagle-0.3.6 later came out with a compatible extension. If ubuntu didnt change anything in the extensions then the extension would work fine as intended (i.e. pre-beagle-0.3.6 incompatible with firefox-3 and 0.3.6 and later is compatible).

This is the answer I got in the Beagle Bugzilla:

"Comment #1 from Debajyoti Bera (beagle developer, points: 17)

The current maxversion is "<em:maxVersion>3.0.*</em:maxVersion>". That should
cover all firefox versions upto and including 3.0.

I think its best to wait till Firefox3 is released and the set the correct
maxversion accordingly.

Comment #2 from Debajyoti Bera (beagle developer, points: 17)

http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Updating_extensions_for_Firefox_3

We have the correct maxversion. Indeed, beagle-0.3.3 had the older extension
which was not even supposed to work correctly with Firefox-3. beagle-0.3.6 was
released with a Firefox-3 compatible extension.

Regarding Ubuntu, if they had just changed the maxversion to 3.0b5 to include
Firefox-3, then expect things to break. Extension maxversions should not be
just increased without consulting with upstream if the extension is at all
compatible with the new version."

Sorry, I didn't notice the Bug Watch added to the Gnome bugzilla (but It is still useful to take a look to the answer in the Gnome bugzilla directly).

The version I was using was the version of the beagle extension available at addons.mozilla.org, not the one in the Ubuntu repositories (which, obviously doesn't work with Firefox 3).

I don't know the procedure in this case (if this is close the bug or wait for an answer from upstream)

PS: Sorry for the incomplete data at the report of the bug and the previous two messages just not a newbie, but previously uncommitted.

the package was not yet ported to firefox 3. we will take a look at
moving the bar higher in intrepid. adding firefox-extensions project
for now.

I am one of the upstream developers.

This bug can be closed at it is not related to Ubuntu.

* The beagle extension packaged in Ubuntu Hardy is not meant to be used in Firefox-3.
* The beagle extension the reporter used was from addons.mozilla.org.
* The beagle extension in the Intrepid version works with Firefox-3.

Alberto, the extension at addons.mozilla.org will be corrected once Firefox-3 is released. In any case, Mozilla rejected the addons (the reason was there is no public review of the extension). So, it is not best to track that site. Instead you should use the link from http://beagle-project.org/Browser_Extension

What reasons were given for the reject?

Alexander,
Pasting from the email about the nomination of the extension on addons.mozilla.org ...

-----------------------------------
Your nominated add-on, Beagle Indexer, has been reviewed by a Mozilla Add-ons editor who decided to retain your add-on in the sandbox.

Review Information:
Reviewer: Sid Kalra
Comments: One of the requirements to go public on addons.mozilla.org is that your add-on must have some reviews either on AMO or elsewhere. See http://shawnwilsher.com/archives/108 for some ideas on how to do that. Once you have those reviews in place, please renominate to go public on AMO.<br />

Thanks.

I agree with the closing.

The extension at the Beagle site works perfectly.

But I think, I don't know If this comment should be made on upstream or not, that the need to download from the Beagle site and not the Mozilla site would need to be clarified (along with the necessary stament the extension is harmless).

Then use the files for the beagle-firefox package for Intrepid. That is based on beagle-0.3.7 and contains a compatible extension.
