Gnome-panel hangs, UI unresponsive

Bug Description

Often gnome-panel hangs on my fujitu u9200. UI gets unresponsive. Only way is to use CTRL+TAB to find already opened terminal window and restart the process by invoking `killall -HUP gnome-panel`.

I am facing similar problems.

1. I use the small menubar in my panel. Out of the blue once in a while, the menu hangs when I click on the menu bar. Only Ctrl + Tab works. The gnome-panel remains hanged for around 20-25 seconds. After which everything is fine. The probability of this happening is more once I have started the system.

2. Also, I am noticing an increased delay when I open a browse file dialog from various applications(to select a file or say save a file). The application hangs for 5-10 seconds and then suddenly the file browser appears and application is stable again.

I somehow feel both of above issues are related.

This is Compaq V4122 laptop running, latest hardy kernel with all other latest updates applied.

I have been noticing this since 10 days may be.

Please let me know what files/logs to attach.

the current comments is likely a different issue, do you have bookmark on smb servers not availables as described on bug #207072?

The same problem occured here, and indeed I have smb bookmarks, but after today's hardy-updates it got worse (currently running gvfs 0.2.5 and gnome-panel 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu1.1). strace-ing gnome-panel showed:
  [0] restart_syscall(<...resuming interrupted call ...>

I'm not quite sure if this affects anything, but I guess it is worth mentioning :/

I've relocated the bottom panel to right hand side.
Usually the hang occurs when there are a lot of programs running in Gnome.
It seems that a new mail notification by Evolution may launch the problem, or a cron job I run which displays a VLC player.
