Okay... lets see if we can do some troubleshooting.

Start pidgin in debug mode from a terminal (pidgin --debug > ~/pidgin-debug.txt). Reproduce the bug and attach the file pidgin-debug.txt, which should be in your home directory. Feel free to mask sensitive information, if any.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the file. Pidgin tries to connect a few times, but fails with dnsquery: Error resolving scs.msg.yahoo.com:
Name or service not known.

At the bottom it can connect (i think it tries without proxy here) , but seems to get yahoo: Unhandled service 0x7d1.

Anyway, it seems like there is some networking issue involved. Are you using a proxy? Please have a look in Tools > Preferences > Network AND Accounts > Manage Accounts > [your account] > Advanced and make sure the settings are correct. Also try to connect with Proxy type: No proxy, and see if you can connect.

If you have a proxy/firewall/router, make sure that traffic on port 5050 is allowed to reach your computer.

And if that doesn't work, lets see if we can get a backtrace. Follow the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace, and attach your backtrace.

Thanks again.
