Unable to set up multiple workspaces in Kubuntu

Bug Description

Running Hardy Heron 64 bit Kubuntu on AMD2 PC with 4Gb ram nVidia Geoforce 7600 GS.
If I try to set more than 2 workspaces in Kubuntu by right clicking anywhere and selecting Configure Desktop - Multiple Desktops, only one desktop is shown in the Configure - KDesktop window. But I have two desktops available and active(as shown in bottom taskbar). I then try to select 4 desktops, click Apply and OK (there are still only two desktops shown in taskbar). I then go back to the Configure - KDesktop window and only one desktop is shown (all others are greyed out).
I've tried rebooting and nothing has changed.
This does not seem to work (for me) with kernels 2.6.24-18 or 2.6.24.16 (if I run from grub). It works fine in Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04.

There shouldn't be an issue with this in Kubuntu Intrepid. (8.10)
If there is, please reopen this bug.
