1. stop firefox
2. run find $HOME/.mozilla/firefox -name extensions.\*
3. copy those files to a safe backup place so we can take a look later
4. remove those files.
5. start firefox

Also try to disable your extensions. maybe run firefox in safe-mode
from command line:

 firefox -safe-mode

I am also experiencing this after running updates this morning. I am unable to browse to www.google.com -- I have not attempted other sites.

What I have tried:

Moving profiles/extensions aside:
mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla-bak

Running in safe mode:
firefox --safe-mode
firefox -safe-mode

I'm not sure which is right but I tried both.

I then realized I had copies of firefox running from before the upgrade. I closed them all, killed any firefox processes with kill -9 and moved my profile back. This worked, it ran a mozilla updater and has been fine. Maybe this is your issue?

yes, you need to restart firefox after upgrades. otherwise you can run
in all kind of issues - unfortunately.

Verified symptoms that Kyle reported. I had Firefox running while the update was happening in Ubuntu. Just closing Firefox and reopening doesn't kill the process completely. Everything worked after I killed the sleeping process and started Firefox again.

Sadaraine,

I'm glad I was able to help! :) I hope Daniel B returns to confirm he was running into the same issue.
