Bug Description
Binary package hint: pulseaudio
Starting in 8.04 the ubuntu uses the pulseaudio system. While pulseaudio is a great system this breaks support for digital output on most systems. This is not acceptable as digital audio output worked in previous version of Ubuntu.
While there are many reported workarounds none of them are simple or work to a satisfactory level. I feel this is a serious problem and pulse audio currently offers no support for SPDIF soundcards. See this bug http://
Until digital output is supported by pulseaudio users should be given the choice if they wish to use the pulseaudio system or at least provided with a simple method to remove the system to restore sound capabilities.
