Package: kernel-image-2.6.9-1-686
Version: 2.6.9-3

Hi.
I'm seeing a similar problem, probably the same: the booting process
doesn't finish because of rivafb module, I have on screen an infinite
loop with the following messages when the rivafb module is probing the card:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
rivafb_pan_display START
rivafb_pan_display END
rivafb_pan_display START
rivafb_pan_display END
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is repeated again and again, and I have to reboot.

The video card is working perfectly with the rivafb module in
kernel-image-2.6.8-1-686 (v. 2.6.8-10). Here you are the relevant lines
of kern.log :

I just upgraded to linux-image-2.6.12-1-k7 (from 2.6.11-1-k7) and the
continuous scrolling

rivafb_pan_display START
rivafb_pan_display END
rivafb_pan_display START

version of this problem appeared. Just to get the system to boot, I
tried renaming /lib/modules/2.6.12-1-k7/kernel/drivers/video/riva/rivafb.ko
to a bogus name so it wouldn't get loaded, and the system booted fine (I
suppose I'm missing some nVidia-special features, but everything looks
ok and X.org even came up using the nv driver.)

Same problem as Rich reported. Old kernel was using the regular text
console. System now boots with fbcon. It dies sometime after the network
configuration with the endless scrolling rivafb_pan_display messages.

It's been my experience that fbcon is slow and unreliable, and I don't
think it should be the default. I'd at least like an option
to /completely/ disable it - I don't want it loading any modules at all.

Burning a netinst CD so I can get my system bootable again.

When starting 2.6.9, everything hangs when starting the framebuffer

I have 2 gfx cards: an AGP ATI AIW (R128), and an NVIDIA TNT2.

There's nothing in the logs.

Hi, this bug has been merged with 333067 and discussion
there has resolved to disable the rivafb module, as it appears
to be a quite broken.

The discussion there also includes a suggested work around,
to move rivafb.ko (or remove it), so it isn't loaded at boot
(or any other time).
