Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

I was able to burn to DVD last week, but not today. Running 8.04 on a Dell M1330.

There was a kernel update this week, and various gnome updates, which may be significant.

Symptom is: I open CD/DVD Creator from Places menu; add the folders I want to copy. Click on Write DVD. The program then asks repeatedly for a blank DVD+R disk, even though one is already in the drive. If I start by inserting a blank DVD, same thing. It doesn't seem to recognise the blank as a blank. (Also fails on DVD-R disk.)

I tried using Brasero instead, and that worked fine, so I think this must be a nautilus error.

nautilus-cd-burner didn't change, that's rather a linux issue

There hasn't been any recent activity in this bug report and we were wondering if this is still an issue? The Ubuntu kernel team is actively working on the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. If you could please test the latest Alpha release for Intrepid it would be much appreciated - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. If the issue still exists, please also provide the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

i'm having the same problem but only after upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10. blank cds are recognized (and record fine), but blank dvds (verbatim dvd+r) are not recognized (by nautilus, brasero or k3b). i've got a LG, vendor HL-DT-ST, model RW/DVD GCC-H31N.

no question is asked when inserting a blank dvd, and no application recognizes that one has been inserted.
synaptic is uptodate, and uname reports i'm on 2.6.27-7-generic.

this is an AMD64 system.

i just realized that i never successfully burnt a dvd in 8.04 either (i never tried it). so this issue may well have already been present in 8.04.

Can now confirm that this is still a problem in Intrepid - I upgraded, and it's still borked.

In fact, the situation is worse now, because I can no longer get Brasero to write to a blank DVD either! SO I currently have no way to back up. :-(

It looks like this LG Combo drive can only handle DVD-ROM. I got confused as that was not what was ordered (on the PC's spec). A more helpful diagnostic message along the lines of "You cannot use this drive to write DVDs because it is a DVD reader only." would have been great.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Same symptoms here with Brasero after switching from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04. My drive is a LG combo.
Fortunately gnomebaker works well.

I confirm this bug. I don't know exactly weather it is a nautlius bug or brasero bug, but when i insert a dvd-rw (or cd-rw) and ask brasero to blank the cd it asks for a blank cd so it doesn't recognize the cd. Also after that my whole system doesn't recognize a cd anymore. Only after switching a cd my system recognize the cd again.

That still happens in Lucid:

See the attached dmesg log file.

Nautilus recognizes when I insert a Video DVD into my LG DVD burner but copy DVD menu option fails with only 20 MB copied.
When I insert a blank DVD into the LG DVD, Brasero cannot see it but K3b sees it fine. Brasero appears to only see my other drive but the media debug log suggests that it first detects the media, then later not ?
The attached file shows the debug-media output, uname -a and lspci
