Bug Description

Just as the title says. I'm not sure what package this should go under, but I've tried every combination of setting Output Order to "Normal" or "Reverse" in the Printing dialog box as well as checking the "Reverse" option within individual program printing windows, but no matter what I do, I am unable to get the Stylus CX4800 to correctly reverse its printing order.

The printer was autodetected upon pluggin it in under Hardy, and installed just fine except for this one glaring problem. This makes printing long documents needlessly painful since I must then manually sort the pages into the correct order after printing is finished.

Well, it turns out that reverse printing does work for Adobe Acrobat PDF reader, so it may not be for every application. However, I can confirm that reverse printing does not work for Firefox 3 beta 5 or Firefox 3 RC 1.

Does it work after setting outputorder=reverse as a default CUPS server option for your printer with this command:
$ lpadmin -p printername -o outputorder-default=reverse
You don't need to select reverse output order in the printing dialog then.

No, that command did nothing. I have determined that changing the output order, either through the command line or the printing utility, does nothing.

However, regardless of what the printing utility output order is set to, setting the reverse option in the application printing dialogs of OpenOffice or Acrobat reader does reverse the printing order.

However, setting that option within Firefox 3 has no effect.

For reverse output printing DSC compliant PostScript is necessary, you can test if the PostScript produced by Firefox 3 is DSC compliant by printing to a file and running the following command:
$ cupstestdsc file.ps

Print to file --> mozilla.ps

cupstestdsc mozilla.ps
mozilla.ps: PASS

Well, it seems to have passed the test, but it still won't reverse print.

This bug needs to be reassigned in terms of what package it effects. I tried printing in epiphany, and once again, it completely ignores any and all attempts to set it to reverse print. This bug is not just a firefox thing. But again, I don't know where it is.

This bug also shows up with and Epson C86 printer. Now, I only have finite data to work with, but it appears that anyone with an Epson printer is sure out of luck trying to reverse printing order from an internet browser. This isn't just a firefox thing, but since it seems to occur on a per-application basis, it would be good to find out what OpenOffice and Evince are doing right that Firefox is screwing up.

I've also found out that reverse printing does not work in gedit.

So far, reverse printing works in Adobe Acrobat and Open Office

But it does not work in Firefox 3, Epiphany, or Open Office.

And this is true with the Stylus CX4800 as well as the Stylus C86.

This whole situation is a bit messed on and completely on an application-by-application basis.

There is something deeper than a firefox issue going on here. It might not even be Firefox's fault at all.

So, what are the differences between how these programs interact with the printing system?

I can confirm that reverse print is working great even in Firefox in the Fedora 10 preview release. So the question is, what is Ubuntu doing wrong here that Fedora is doing right?

Ok, I don't know when or if this will be cleared up or what is causing it, but I have moved on to an HP printer, and here is what I know about the problem so far:

On the Epson printer, reverse print doesn't work in Ubuntu firefox, but works fine in Fedora 10 firefox.

On the HP printer, reverse print works fine in Ubuntu firefox. Haven't tried it with Fedora 10, but I expect that it would work there too.

With the new printer, the problem, though it remains unsolved, it effectively dead to me.
