Bug Description

This is not a new bug for me. The last time that my sound card was automatically recognized by a linux distro was with Debian Sarge. Then something changed at the kernel and/or alsa and I have tried several linux distros and my sound card does not work in any of them. I also tried several Ubuntu and Kubuntu versions, and the result is also the same: I see the GStreamer icon with a red "x", and if I click in it it says something like "no device to handle". If I do "lspci" I see my sound card, and if I install open sound system (oss) my sound card works pretty well (but I still have troubles with the microphone and flash in firefox). I have tried really a lot of things to make this work, but now I decided to report the bug here to see if you can help me.

Please let me know what additional info do you need.

Thanks.

If you could leave the status as incomplete as the triage process is not yet complete, I have yet to review the information you posted. By a bug having a "new" status it means that a triager hasn't yet looked at the bug. Once I have enough information for the developers I will mark the bug as confirmed.

Thanks,

Richard Seguin

Confirming bug as there is a line in dmesg that indicates the device probe failed.

[ 36.087423] Yamaha DS-1 PCI: probe of 0000:00:09.0 failed with error -16

I also noticed that your not running an up to date kernel version... Could you run your system updates and report back if you have the problem (you probably will, I just need to rule out that it hasn't been fixed yet).

Once I receive your response I'll confirm the bug so developers can investigate further.

Thanks,

Richard Seguin

I have consulted a member of the kernel team and they want you to try disabling the printer port in your bios and try the sound again... This will help us to further narrow down the problem.

Thanks,

I upgraded to the new kernel and I disabled my "Onboard Parallel Port" from my BIOS, but I still see the same error. New logs below:

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Hi Sebastián,

This bug was reported a while ago and hasn't had any recent activity. Is this still an issue with the most recent Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release? You should be able to test using a LiveCD. Please let us know your results. For now I'm going to retarget this bug to the actively developed linux kernel package. During the Intrepid development cycle the linux-ubuntu-modules package was merged with the linux kernel package. Thanks.

I have Yamaha YMF740-v based sound card and I still get the above error 'Yamaha DS-1 PCI: probe of 0000:03:02.0 failed with error -16' in Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release.

Great, I see that ashik already tested the problem with Intrepid Ibex. Do you need me to repeat the test on my pc, or ashik logs are ok?

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Sebastián Fontana, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
