Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Upgraded from gutsy gibbon to hardy heron with consequent firefox upgrade. When I try to open a .wav attachment, I would like it top open with /usr/bin/play instead of the default. Instead of opening the application with the desired application, the download manager just shows that the file has been downloaded. I can only open it with the original default application, even though I changed the default.

so this is in fact: "download manager window doesnt honour custom
application selected in Edit -> Preference -> Applications for a
certain content type" ?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

This issue affects me as well. Confirmed with Ubuntu 9.04 i386 Desktop live CD.

The Ubuntu Firefox Modifications needs to be cleaned up, in regards to what kind of dialog to open.
I want to see this:
What should Firefox do with this file?
O Open with: [drop down list |v]
  O Save file
[ ] Do this automatically from now on

I almost always get this useless dialog:
Would you like to save this file?
  [Cancel] [Save file]

When I download a .exe, I can't get Firefox to use WINE or ask me what to do, no matter what I set in Preferences->Applications. It will always (unsuccessfully) open in Archive Manager (Ubuntu's default for .exe)

Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
