Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

When I click on System, Administration, Synaptic, it fails to start. Idem if I click in my launch-icon in the pannel.
The command asociated with both icons is gksu gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic. Itś curious, because if I type in terminal gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic, and "sudo password timer" is active (so there is no need to retipe password), the program starts without problem, but if it's necesary to enter the passwd, synaptic does not start, nor gksu asks me for a password. I tried to change launcher properties to gksudo and sudo and I have the same problerm.
If I type run in terminal sudo synaptic, there's no problem, synaptic starts.
I had no problem with other gksu launchers, only synaptic

Same here, fresh 8.04 x_64 and just after updating from 2.6.*-16 to 2.6.*-17.
Auto-updates works.

Terminal -> gksu synaptic doesn't work.
Terminal -> synaptic or sudo synaptic works.

Yes: add/remove and "update manager" (I suppose that's its name) don't work. I CAN'T INSTALL PACKAGES graphically!

Not a solution or idea of what the problem was, but synaptic works

The problem is that gksu is in "su" mode and not in "sudo" mode.

You can solve this problem with gconf-editor.

Open a terminal window and enter command:

gconf-editor

Follow entries:

"apps" / "gksu"

And select the "sudo-mode" option.

Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Hardy reached EOL on May 12, 2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:

I've tried recreating this bug with Oneiric and was unable to, given the information you've provided. Please either a) upgrade and test or b) increase the verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we can try again.

Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.
